All about UGC NET Online

The process of gaining and imparting education has been a tradition of this soil – India. Traces of Indian participation in the academic field can be found very early in the development process of human civilization; no wonder the invention of number system is attributed to Indians along with their Arab counterparts. In fact even during the time of enslavement Indians did not forsake this legacy. That is the reason the universities of Calcutta, Bombay (now Mumbai) and Madras were set up in 1857, followed by the University of Allahabad in 1887.

As the number of Universities in India exploded especially after its independence there was felt a need for inter-university synchronization across India. To meet this end an Association of Indian Universities was founded in 1925 (earliest known as Inter-University Board). The boards primary purpose was to share information in the field of education, culture, sports etc.

It appears that the Association of Indian Universities eventually evolved into what we know as the UGC NET Online in November 1956. However unlike its predecessor the UGC has very finely defined spectrum and consequently it explicitly addresses the needs Indian Universities!

Therefore if it was to be enquired as to what exactly is a UGC then it is a “statutory body of the Government of India through an Act of Parliament for the coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of university education in India.” (Source)

Career with UGC

Now the core issue pertaining to the UGC – the sort of career it offers. The careers offered by UGC can be divided into two types

  • the one for the students and
  • the other for the teaching community.

We would have a look at both of them separately, God willing herein.

It is “NET” for Students?

Basically, for students, UGC NET Online offers two types of career. One is the Junior Research Fellowships and the other is the Eligibility for Assistant Professor. UGC conducts awarding both the positions based on the specialized examination that it conducts. This exam is called as the National Eligibility Test or the NET.

Junior Research Fellowship: The JRFs is the first step towards the process of admission into PhD programs in India. There are total of two hundred and fifty seats available in different areas of science which is awarded to deserving candidates who successfully qualify the JRF test (ICMR JRF).

The JRF qualification automatically makes the candidate eligible for a monthly stipend of Rs. 16, 000 and an annual contingency grant of Rs. 20, 000. This is to assist the candidate in his/her study and living.

Educational Qualification and Age Limit for UGC NET Online: As already stated that NET is the first step towards further study within PhD program, the minimum educational qualification for the NET examination is that the candidate should possess a minimum Masters degree or its equivalent (M.Sc/M.A or equivalent) with a minimum of 55% marks (in General category of Indian citizens).

Similarly NET also prescribes the age limit for NET appearing candidates to be not more than 28 years while appearing for the test.

That is only those candidate would be eligible for further interview into the appointment of Assistant Professorship who qualified the NET; however, besides the NET, state governed bodies may also conduct examination known as SET (State Eligibility Test) – a state level variant for NET.

Candidates who have already qualified for the SET exam for Assistant Professorship before June 1, 2002 are exempted from appearing in NET, being qualified to apply for Assistant Professorship all over India. Nevertheless, post June 1, 2002 State Eligibility Test qualified candidates are restricted to apply only in the respective state (the state in which they qualified the SET) for the post of Assistant Professorship in Universities/Colleges.
